Reaching Out To Students & Teens EXPECT RESPECTis a comprehensive prevention program designed to raise awareness of dating violence, teach skills for healthy relationships, develop youth leadership, and increase safety and respect on and within schools. For more information, please contact our Expect Respect Team: Diane Dahm Program Coordinator, Womansplace (412) 664-7146 ext. 212 ddahm@womansplace.org Jennifer Sethman Program Coordinator, The Consortium for Public Education (412) 678-9215 jsethman@tcfpe.org PROGRAM COMPONENTS: EXPECT RESPECT SUPPORT GROUPS & COUNSELING Support groups and individual counseling are provided for students who have experienced domestic violence or sexual abuse and for students in abusive dating relationships. Support groups help teens heal from past abuse, learn skills for healthy relationships, and prevent future victimization and perpetration. SAFETEENS YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING SafeTeens training empowers youth to become leaders in preventing bullying, sexual harassment, and relationship violence in their schools and communities. Created for 7th to 12th graders, this leadership training expands participants knowledge about abusive and healthy relationships, and builds peer support and advocacy skills. SCHOOL-WIDE PREVENTION Womansplace provides training and technical assistance to schools to engage all members of the school community in teaching and supporting positive relationship behaviors, improve the school climate, and increase student safety. Strategies include training on school policy concerning bullying, sexual harassment, and dating violence; assessing school climate; and engaging students and caring adults in school-wide prevention activities. SafePlace features Choose Respect, a primary prevention initiative developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Choose Respect consists of a variety of educational materials that are designed to encourage youth ages 11-14 to form healthy, respect relationships and to prevent dating abuse before it starts. SafePlace provides training and technical assistance for schools who want to implement Choose Respect on their campus including faculty/staff orientation, facilitator training for teachers and counselors who will conduct classroom activities, parent seminars, and assistance with campus-specific awareness activities.
